The spiritual side of fasting
Allah Almighty commanded the community of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to fast, saying: “ O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, just as it was prescribed for those who were before you – perhaps you will become God-fearing “(2: 183).
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “ Allah does not need that one who does not stop lying and acting on lies, leaves his food and drink .”
al-Bukhari (1903).
Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi, commenting on this hadith, said: “Indeed, Allah Almighty does not need a person to abstain from food and drink if he does not restrain his tongue.
At the same time, Allah does not need anything. This hadeeth indicates the fear (of a fasting person who has not stopped lying and acting in a lie) that he will not receive a reward for his fast.
