Knowledge that is not useful
Muhammad al-Amin ash-Shinqiti ( may Allah have mercy on him ) said:
Some interpreters of the Qur’an mention different opinions regarding the name of this dog (from Surah Kahf). Some say that her name was Kytmir. Others say that her name was Himran. Other opinions have been expressed, but we won’t talk about it much for lack of usefulness.
There are many things in the great Quran that neither Allah nor His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained to us, and for the explanation of which nothing reliable has come. And studying these questions does not bring any benefit.
Many interpreters of the Qur’an show excess in mentioning opinions about which there is neither knowledge nor benefit.
We constantly refuse this. For example, we can talk about the color of this dog, about its name, about that part of the cow with which the murderer from among the descendants of Israel was hit, about the name of the boy who was killed by al-Khidr and whose murder Musa condemned, or about which tree Noah’s ark was built, what was the width and what was the length of the ark, how many tiers did it have, and many other questions, in the study of which there is no benefit and regarding which no argument has come to form a correct opinion.
