Benefit someone in order to get more from him

The Almighty said:

“And do not show mercy (to anyone), seeking [hoping] (to receive from him) more!” [Quran 74: 6]

• Ibn Kathir in his Tafsir to the verse said:

“Ibn ‘Abbas said:” Do not give alms in order to get more of this”

• Further, giving three more interpretations, he said:

“Among these four interpretations, the first is closer to the truth. And Allah knows best ”.

• Abd ar-Rahman al-Sa’di, although he himself leaned towards a different meaning of this verse, also gave this interpretation, saying:

“Some commentators believe that the meaning of these verses is that you CANNOT give people a gift, wanting them to thank you with something more.”
