Next Forgotten Sunnah – Visiting Cemeteries

It is narrated from the words of Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I used to forbid you to visit the graves, and from now on visit them, for they keep from the pleasures of life near and remind you of life future” .

According to Abu Hurayrah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures – death!” at-Tirmidhi (2307)

It is also reported from Anas that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures! Indeed, if one of you remembers death in a difficult situation, it will surely seem easy to him, and if he remembers death in an easy situation, it will seem difficult to him!
?al-Bazzar in “Kashf al-astar” (4/240). Hafiz, al-Munziri, Hafiz al-Haysami and Sheikh al-Albani called the hadeeth good.

Shaykh ‘Abdurrazzaq Badr said: When a person goes to the cemetery to remember the Hereafter, he understands that one of the days (and he will be there), and maybe it will happen very soon, maybe it will be through several hours.

▪️ Let a person not be deceived by youth! Let not be deceived by health! When death comes, it does not distinguish between young and old. Moreover, very often the angel of death comes into the house and takes the young and leaves the old. And this is known (among the people). Some houses are inhabited by people whose age is close to a hundred.

▪️ The inhabitants of this house expect every day that he will die today or tomorrow (and fear for him). But then death takes one of the young inhabitants of the house. Death does not distinguish between young and old. The one whose term has approached, whose death has come, his soul will be taken away and he will leave this life.

▪️ And so a person visits the graves in order to remember the Last Life. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Visit the graves, because they serve as a reminder of the Last Life for you.” A person (when visiting a cemetery) should not forget about these meanings (about the words of the Prophet ﷺ).

▪️ There are some people who are not left by worldly fun even when they enter the cemetery. They laugh, joke, tell jokes. Worldly joy is with them, even that strong edification that before their eyes does not enter his heart. Fun and merriment covered his heart, despite the fact that he is in a place of great remembrance and edification.

▪️ Therefore, the visitor to the cemetery should not forget that the purpose of his visit is to remind. “Visit the graves, for they serve as a reminder to you of the Last Life.”
