What is meant by the term Sunnah in Islam?
▪️ Sheikh Ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: “Sunnah is what the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was on by belief, words and deeds.”
?See Al-Hamawiya 2.
Sheikhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said about the term “Ahlu-Sunna wal-Jama’a”: “These are those who strictly follow the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as well as , on which the first generations from among the Muhajirs and Ansars, and those who sincerely followed them, agreed. “
?See “Majmu’ul-fataua” 2/375.
▪️ Hafiz Ibn Rajab said: “The imams of our ummah under the word“ Sunnah ”meant the path of the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions, who were free from doubts and passions.
Then, by “Sunnah” they began to mean a belief cleared of doubts in matters of faith in Allah, angels, Scripture, messengers, the Day of Judgment and predestination, as well as in matters of the merits of companions, etc. And books on this topic were named “Sunnah”.
The reason that this science was named “Sunnah” was its importance. And the one who contradicts what is in these books, he dooms himself to destruction. “
?See “Kashful-kurba” 1/320.
▪️ the imam of the Sunnah of his time al-Barbahari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Know that Islam is the Sunnah, and the Sunnah is Islam, and one cannot exist without the other”.
?See “Sharhu-Ssunna” 34.
▪️ Yunus ibn ‘Ubaid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It is amazing that someone calls for the Sunnah in our day, but even more amazing when someone answers this and accepts the Sunnah!”
?See Al-Khiliya 3/21.
? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
The one who started some good practice in Islam will receive a reward for it, as well as the reward of those who follow this custom after it until the Day of Judgment. The one who starts some bad practice in Islam, will bear the burden of this sin itself, and the burden of sins of those who will adhere to this custom after it until the Day of Judgment.
?Muslim 1017
▪️ Said Imam al-Nawawi (631-676 x / 1233-1277 m) in the comments of this hadith:
“This hadith contains an urge to do good deeds and establish good traditions, as well as a warning against inventing … innovations.
This hadith speaks of a case when a man brought a bag of money, which he could barely hold in his hands because of the weight. And people, looking at him, also began to donate money. And this is the great merit of the person who laid the foundation for this good deed. Also, this hadith contains an explanation of other words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him): “Every innovation is an innovation. Any innovation is a delusion . “
